OBJECTIVE: Students will describe in writing how the periodic table is organized and explain how properties are related to the element’s atomic structure.
 W.O.D. Succinct-marked by compact precision
WARM-UP

1. An element has an electron configuration 1s22s22p4. To which group and period does this element belong? Is the element a metal, non-metal, or a metalloid?
CW
1.Complete the handout using your notebook.
2.On the back of your handout, draw an outline of the periodic table and indicate generally where the 3 classes of elements are located. Use your textbook for help.
3.On a separate sheet of paper (attach to handout), write the electron configuration for each element and then arrange the elements in groups based on their valence configuration.
Sodium, fluorine, beryllium, sulfur, nitrogen, neon, chlorine, oxygen, potassium, magnesium, phosphorus, & manganese. Give an explanation for your organization.
