ENVIRONMENTAL SC. NOV. 26 & 27, 2018

OBJECTIVE: Students will describe the different levels of organization studied by ecologists and discuss how an organism’s habitat relates to its survival.

WARM-UP
Define the following terms: ecology, species, population, community, ecosystem, biosphere, habitat, & resource

HW
1. For each of the levels of ecological organization, state whether it contains only biotic factors,       abiotic factors, or both biotic and abiotic factors.
2. Write a question that an ecologist might ask when studying life at each of the levels.

CW (10 mins)
In groups of twos, find a picture of an aquarium and answer/discuss the following questions: Identify (a) individual (b) a population (c) a community (d) an ecosystem

A. View the video found at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GlnFylwdYH4 as you view this video look for the vocabulary words from the warm-up.
B. View the Powerpoint population ecology and explain the difference between habitat and niche. 
    On a separate sheet of paper, define habitat and niche and show how they are different.
    How is it possible for two organisms’ niches to overlap? Describe what happens when niches overlap.
