ENVIRONMENTAL SC. OCT. 4 & 5, 2018

OBJECTIVE: Students will investigate the components of the hydrological cycle to determine the movement and distribution of water on earth.

W.O.D. Salient-significant or conspicuous

WARM-UP
Define the following terms: hydrological cycle, evaporation, transpiration, condensation, precipitation, Aquifers, groundwater

HOME WORK

At least 2.8 billion people in the world experience water scarcity once every month. Write an essay (50 words or more) to explain possible reasons for this widespread global problem. Utilize processes in te hydrological cycle in your answer.

As you view the video record three terms that were used, that were not included in the warm-up and give their meaning.

Demo of water distribution on earth (see page 80 fig. 18) 1000 ml of water

GROUP WORK

Group A: Evaporation and transpiration
Include the following information
An explanation of evaporation & transpiration
A diagram to illustrate evaporation & transpiration
Areas of the earth where evaporation & transpiration occurs
Environmental factors that influences evaporation & transpiration

Group B: Condensation
Include the following information:
An explanation of condensation
A diagram to illustrate the process of condensation and the areas of the earth where condensation often occurs
Environmental factors that influences condensation

Group C: Precipitation
Include the following information
An explanation of precipitation
A diagram to illustrate the process and types of precipitation and the areas of the earth where precipitation often occurs
Environmental factors that influences precipitation

Group D: groundwater
Include the following information
An explanation of groundwater
The concept of infiltration and permeability
What is an aquifer
A diagram to illustrate groundwater in an aquifer, and the water table

Each group will present their assigned activities to the class starting in alpha order.

EVALUATION (20 mins)
Explain in writing with the use of appropriate diagrams, how a drop of water in the ocean can be a part of your saliva.
