Chemistry Dec. 4 & 7, 2015

OBJECTIVE: Students will describe in writing how the periodic table is organized and explain how properties are related to the element’s atomic structure.

WARM-UP
1.There are 3 classes of elements on the periodic table. Name these classes and state their locations on the periodic table.

2.Give one property of each class of element named above.

1.Complete the handout using your textbook.
2.On the back of your handout, draw an outline of the periodic table and indicate generally where the 3 classes of elements are located. Use your textbook for help.
3. On a separate sheet of paper (attach to handout), write the electron configuration for each element and then arrange the elements in groups based on their valence configuration:
Sodium, fluorine, beryllium, sulfur, nitrogen, neon, chlorine, oxygen, potassium, magnesium, phosphorus, & manganese. Give an explanation for your organization.
