W.O.D. Billowing-swelling, fluttering, waving
WARM-UP
Name 3 types of plate boundaries and describe the movement of the plates at each type of boundary
CLASSWORK
GROUP ACTIVITY
In pre-selected groups show how each landform is formed and describe the effects it has on the structure of the earth’s surface, and how it affects the distribution of animals and plants, (including humans).
a. Drifting continents c. Earthquakes e.Rift valleys
b. Mountain building d. Volcanoes f. Volcanic islands
See the board for the scoring rubric
Detail information
A. Drifting continents
Find a map of the continents, cut out each continent and fit the pieces together to form Pangaea using scotch tape or glue.
Show using plate tectonic how and why the continents moved into the positions where they are now. Also mention the formation of the oceans.
Predict the future locations of the continents and oceans if plate tectonics continues using another cut out of the continents.
B. Mountain building
Show how mountains are produced from different types of plate movement
What are some effects of mountains on the surface of the earth and weather patterns?
Give examples of locations on earth where mountains/mountain ranges are found.
C. Earthquakes
Show how earthquakes are produced from different types of plate movement
What are some effects of earthquakes on the surface of the earth and its effects on human populations?
Give examples of locations on earth where earthquakes are commonly found.
D. Volcanoes
Show how volcanoes are formed at different types of plate boundaries.
Describe the effects of volcanoes on the surface of the earth and its impact on human population.
Show where on earth volcanoes are commonly found
E. Rift Valley
Show how rift valleys are formed and the type of plate boundary involved.
Describe the effects of rift valleys on the surface of the earth and its impact on human population.
Show where on rift valleys are commonly found
F. Volcanic islands
Show how volcanic islands are formed at the type of plate boundary involved.
Describe the effects of volcanic islands on the surface of the earth and its impact on human population.
Show where on earth volcanic islands are commonly found
